Iran Fires 180 Ballistic Missiles at Israel in Second Direct Strike
Iran launches a second direct ballistic missile attack on Israel, this time firing approximately 180 missiles in retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and IRGC commanders.
On October 1, 2024, Iran launched its second direct attack on Israel in six months approximately 180 ballistic missiles fired at Israeli territory in what Iran dubbed "Operation True Promise II." The attack came days after Israel assassinated Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah in a massive strike on Beirut and killed IRGC General Abbas Nilforoushan. Iran said the barrage was retaliation for these killings. Israel, with US support, intercepted most of the missiles. The attack demonstrated Iran's willingness to escalate to direct confrontation and revealed the increasingly precarious state of the regional order. Israel warned of severe consequences and subsequently launched strikes on Iranian military targets.
