US and Israel Launch Massive Military Campaign Against Iran, Killing Khamenei
The United States and Israel launch coordinated large-scale strikes on Iran killing Supreme Leader Khamenei and devastating Iran's military, nuclear, and government infrastructure in the most dramatic escalation in the conflict's history.
On February 28, 2026 just two days after nuclear talks in Geneva ended without a deal Israel and the United States launched massive coordinated strikes on Iran. The operation, which the US dubbed "Operation Epic Fury," targeted nuclear sites, IRGC facilities, air defenses, government buildings, and military infrastructure across Iran. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who had led Iran for over 35 years, was killed. Other senior Iranian officials and commanders were also killed. Iranian cities experienced extensive damage. Iran retaliated with hundreds of missiles and drones targeting Israel and US military bases across the region including in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. The attacks caused oil market turmoil and threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz.
